PURSE WATCH!

Please do not leave your purse unattended in your car or shopping cart. By doing so, you leave yourself vulnerable to theft, fraud and identity theft.

SUMMER SAFETY

Here are some suggestions to keep your children safe this summer.

Children should always check with a parent or adult in charge before going anywhere with anyone, including friends.

They should always take a friend with them when going somewhere or playing outside.

Make sure your children know their full name, address and phone number.

Tell them it's okay to say "NO" if someone tries to touch them or treat them in a way that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

Children should never take a ride or get in a car with someone, unless they are with a parent or trusted adult.

Children should NEVER get in an empty car, appliance, or other item that they could become trapped in.

Discuss boundaries for your children, i.e., where they can play (park, friends house) and what is off limits (pool without an adult, canals, etc.)

Tell them to keep doors and gates locked and not to open them to anyone when they are alone.

Don't drop your children off at the mall, movie, video arcade, community pool or park without adult supervision. These are not safe places for children to be alone.

Teach your child who they can ask for help from, and what places are safe to get help at, if they are lost.

TELEPHONE SCAMS: TEXT MESSAGES AND MISSED CALLS

A variety of telephone scams are on the rise, so exercise caution if you receive a text message or call from a telephone number you do not recognize. The telephone scams work in a variety of ways including:

You receive a text message, supposedly from your bank or credit card company, stating that there is an issue with your account, credit or debit card. You are asked to call them and provide personal information, such as your account number and your PIN.

You receive a text message or voice mail indicating that you have won a prize. When you call, you are told you must pay a fee in order to claim the prize. Before calling, think....did you even enter a contest?

Your cell phone rings, but they hang up so quickly that you can't answer the call. Your phone registers a missed call and a phone number you don't recognize. You call the number and are directed to a premium rate service (usually signified by a telephone number that starts with 19 or 190) and charged a high per-minute rate.

Prevention:  Do Not Reply to text messages or missed calls from telephone numbers you do not recognize. If the call is important, the caller will call you back. If you do reply, you may find yourself on the receiving end of many unwanted solicitations.
