New Community Information Service Launched
For those of you that have been involved in Neighborhood Watch for awhile, you may remember we had a “Community Information Service” called SCAN (Safe Community Alert Network) a few years back. This service provided the Alhambra Police Department the opportunity to electronically send out notices to Alhambra residents who subscribed to receive these special Alerts. These alerts could be sent directly to your cell phone via text message, or to your e-mail, almost immediately. The Alhambra Police Department used this service several times for missing persons, wanted subjects, and other announcements we as a police department wanted to get out in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, SCAN went out of service about two or three years ago and we lost our ability to send out these special alerts. FORTUNATELY, a new Community Information Service, called Nixle, just came on line and is now available to us. It basically does the same thing as the SCAN Alerts but has an extra feature – we can target (zoom in) a specific neighborhood. This can be really useful if we have a missing child or a containment going on and we need your help.
The Nixle service is very user friendly and easy to use. Best of all, Nixle is FREE to all users however if you elect to receive cell phone text messages, text message rates may apply based on your mobile phone plan. No Spam and No Advertising. The service is designed solely for the purpose of communicating important public safety information. I encourage each of you to check out Nixle at www.nixle.com to learn more about the type of messages you can receive and why being a subscriber to this service benefits you and the community we live in. Signing up is simple and your information is completely confidential.
If you have any questions, problems, or feedback about this service, please feel free to e-mail the Crime Prevention Office, or call Sharon Williams at (626) 570-5177.
