Watch Your PropertyRemember that criminals are seeking an easy way to obtain property that does not belong to them. This includes taking items from your front yard and/or your vehicle. Don't leave wallets, purses, electronics, weapons or any valuables in your vehicle. Keep bikes locked up or stored in a locked garage or shed, and don't leave toys or expensive items out in the yard when you are not around. Know Where Your Children AreKnow where your children are at all times -- where they are playing, at a friends home, etc. Remind them never to talk to strangers, to stay in groups, and return directly home when told to. If they are at a friend's home, it is strongly advised that you meet the parents first, have their address and phone number, and periodically check in with your child. It is fairly inexpensive and is very effective for identifying jewelry. Any jeweler can take this description and compare it to a piece of jewelry to determine if it is the right piece. Victim Assistance ProgramGive your spare time purpose. If you have a special place in your heart for helping others to cope in situations of crisis or trauma, or an interest in law enforcement, volunteering with the Mesa Police Department's Victim Services Unit may be the thing for you. The Victim Assistance program is looking for volunteers to become trained in crisis intervention and victim assistance. These volunteers are on-call to respond to traumatic events - serious injury accidents, domestic violence calls, sexual assault, death notification, etc. - to help victims and/or their survivors cope with the immediate aftermath of the incident. Training and equipment are provided. If you are interested in giving your spare time purpose, please call the Victim Assistance coordinator at 480-644-4025 or the Mesa PD Volunteer Coordinator at 480-644-2073.
