CHIEF'S MESSAGE

As we move forward into 2009, our community is certaly going to be faced by many challenges. Over the past two years, one of the biggest accomplishments for the Mesa Police Department has been the steady reduction in crime. Through constant hard work and partnership with the community, we hope to continue with the success in crime reduction.

In keeping wiht this commitment to the community, we are starting 2009 with a monthly crime prevention newsletter. Each month the newsletter will provide residents with useful information and tips to keep themselves and their belongings secure. Through this newsletter, we will be able to keep residents up-to-date with new crime trends and department information. We feel this is another strong link in the bond between the Mesa community and the Mesa Police Department.

We look forward to a successful 2009!

George Gascón
Chief of Police

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This year, resolve to keep your family and property safe from criminals!

Please remember to keep your garage door closed at all times, unless in use or you can see your garage from where you are working (washing your car, lawn work, etc.). Criminals take the path of least resistance. If you leave your garage door open and valuable items inside, the criminals see that as a golden opportunity.

Remember to lock the door that leads from your garage into your home.

With the beautiful weather we are having, many people will want to keep their windows open during the afternoon hours. If you are going to have your windows open, never leave the room unattended. If you are going to leave the room, even for a short period of time, close and lock the windows. While this may seem inconvenient, a large percentage of residential burglaries occur when thieves enter an unlocked door or open window.

 HELP PREVENT BICYCLE THEFT

A bicycle can provide hours of enjoyment and is a great means of transportation! We would like to encourage you to always ride safely, obey the traffic laws and don't forget to wear a helmet. In addition, we would like you to take a few moments to record some important information. Record the serial number, Operation ID number (if there is one), owner's name, address, city, state, zip, phone number, bike description (boys, girls, size, brand, model, color, number of speeds, fenders, unique features), date purchased and if it was new or used. Keep this info and a photo of your bike in a safe place. If you bike is ever stolen, this information will help police find and return it to you as quickly as possible.

Always keep your bike locked when not in use. When using any type of bike rack, be sure to double lock -- one lock for the front wheel and frame, a second lock for the back wheel and frame with both attached to the rack. Bike locks are inexpensive and protect your property from theft. Now...off to enjoy your bicycle!

HEAT/VIN Etching Event

Have your vehicle windows etched with your vehicle's identification number (VIN) or sign up for the Watch Your Car program at this event and received a free steering wheel lock, while supplies last. Contact a crime prevention officer for more information.
